 Brad Lazarus:
So I've got Max here from The Milestones, Hey Max, how are you doing?

Max Grunhard:
            Good, good.

Brad Lazarus:
The Milestones are a Motown band and soul band. Thanks for your time here, what we are going to do is to ask Max a few questions, get to know him a little bit, get to understand a little bit about The Milestones can do for you for a private or corporate function, so let's go straight into it. Max, how long have you been a musician for?

Max Grunhard:
            About 20 years.

Brad Lazarus:
Okay, is that an Australian accent, where are you from?

Max Grunhard:
I am from Sydney, yeah, I'm here for about 10 years, came over to pursue my musical career in London, essentially.

Brad Lazarus:
Okay, have you had any formal music education?

Max Grunhard:
Yeah, I study Jazz at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, which is a very prestigious collage in Australia.

Brad Lazarus:
Okay, okay, sorry you said 10 years, what year did you come over here, early 2000?

Max Grunhard:
            Yeah, it was early 2000.

Brad Lazarus:
Okay so your formal music education was in Sydney?

Max Grunhard:
            Yes, that is right.

Brad Lazarus:
Okay, so now you are working here as a professional musician, so when you are not playing with The Milestones, what are you doing, generally?

Max Grunhard:
Generally writing music, playing other gigs, various different projects, producing, just things involving music, I am a full-time musician so I'm just trying to do as much as I can on that all the time, basically.

Brad Lazarus:
Okay, so just kind of getting on to The Milestones, then. Primarily, what do you feel, what do The Milestones offer music-wise, style-wise, what do they offer?

Max Grunhard:
Stylistically I guess it's essentially a spectrum of soul music ranging from Motown traditional soul, R&B, 70s funk, disco right up to modern R&B and a few popular hits from the new music aswell.

Brad Lazarus:
Okay so you are very much a band for kind of after dinner dancing really, is that right?

Max Grunhard:
Yeah, we play dance music essentially.

Brad Lazarus:
Okay, okay and what kind of size does the band normally come in?

Max Grunhard:
Well, we can offer a range of line-ups, our usual line-up is a seven-piece but we also got a six-piece or even a 5-piece, up to a 8,9,10-piece with the additional things like percussion, extra vocalists, so we are pretty much able to suite any requirements.

Brad Lazarus:
Okay, so you are primarily a sax player so that standard, the most popular line-ups are really the 6 and the 7-piece.

Max Grunhard:
Yes, saxophone, keyboards, one or two vocals, base drums and guitars.

Brad Lazarus:
So even with that standard 6-piece line-up with one vocalist you are always ensured of the whole sound because you are very much a part of it, right?

Max Grunhard:
Yes, absolutely, I mean we are always singing the whole section, that's a feature of what we do as a band.

Brad Lazarus:
Okay, when it comes to kind of playing with the band, do you find people very much are about dancing?

Max Grunhard:
Yes, I think that's what people want from us, is essentially just to have a good time, have a party after the formalities of an event, perhaps we are the part really they tend to let their hair down and we always get the crowd, get the party moving, that's basically what we see as our job.

Brad Lazarus:
Right, okay, so you your experience as a band leader is being part of a successful event really, isn't it as opposed to playing to yourself, would that be right?

Max Grunhard:
Yes, absolutely, I mean it's just all about, you know if we are playing at a wedding or a corporate event, all these things means a lot to the clients to have a really special day so that's basically our range to provide that special experience, I guess.

Brad Lazarus:
Okay, okay. So we have kind of established really that the most popular line-up is really about the 6 and the 7-piece. The 7-piece includes the male and female vocalist, isn't it?

Max Grunhard:
            That's right, yeah.

Brad Lazarus:
So primarily what kind of events do The Milestones play at?

Max Grunhard:
Well we play everything from sort of smaller weddings, more intimate settings, into rural country houses in England up to like big corporate events, internationally we might be flying, recently we went to Istanbul for a big event so yeah, it's a broad spectrum of events.

Brad Lazarus:
So wherever they'll have you, then?

Max Grunhard:
            Exactly, yes.

Brad Lazarus:
Okay, just in terms of, you know just specifically looking at the wedding market, do you take first dance requests, are you happy to do that?

Max Grunhard:
Yes, absolutely, first dance requests and we also trying to accommodate any other gigs people particularly want us to do, any repertoire that we can provide, we try do to that for people so we have a very large repertoire.

Brad Lazarus:
Okay, that is good to hear, then so what happens when the band is not performing then, what would be going on at that point?

Max Grunhard:
We are trying to put on, we always thought to have our own DJ style music that we play at weddings so we play through our system dance music that goes without brakes and there is particular requests for that Dina music, we can provide that in the background, through the our PA as well.

Brad Lazarus:
So that all goes to through the PA, so nothing there for the clients to worry about?

Max Grunhard:
Exactly, we can even play live dinner music if it's requested as part of an event.

Brad Lazarus:
Sure, sure okay fine. Okay so that gives us a kind of a good insight into what The Milestones are all about. Is there anywhere that people can go and see you?

Max Grunhard:
Yeah, we play a monthly residency at Dover Street Wine Bar in Central London, very convenient sort of nice way to come and check out what we do essentially.

Brad Lazarus:
Okay, and that is normally a Thursday or a Friday night, isn't it?

Max Grunhard:
Yeah, usually Thursday and Friday night, that's right.

Brad Lazarus:
Okay, and you get people on the guest list for that, right?

Max Grunhard:
Absolutely so anyone who wants to come, we can get you in and you get to see what we are all about, basically.

Brad Lazarus:
Okay, fine and obviously the site is there for the people to check you out a bit more with some media files, audio files?

Max Grunhard:
Yes there are audio files, photos, general sort of publicity material that you expect on a website, that's right.

Brad Lazarus:
Okay and you've recently had a chat play on the radio, is that right?

Max Grunhard:
Yeah, we did a version of The Kings of Leon track - Sex on Fire which Craig Charles took to in on his radio show on BBC6. He actually played it four weeks in a row. Potentially there are going to be few more interesting things happening on that show as well so, yeah.

Brad Lazarus:
Okay, well that track, can you hear that track on the website?

Max Grunhard:
            Absolutely, yeah.

Brad Lazarus:
Okay, well listen, that was great, thanks for your time, Max and that gives everybody listening a bit of an insight of what they can expect from The Milestones and thanks for your time.

Max Grunhard:
Great, it was a pleasure, thank you.

Brad Lazarus:
            Okay, cheers then!
